About the Event

This course is aimed at runners who would like to work on their navigation - it is perfect for those who are preparing for events such as the Original Mountain Marathon, other mountain marathons, fell or oritenteering races, self supported events and races that require navigation.

This is a comprehensive course and you should leave on the Sunday feeling as though you have all the skills there to head out into the unpathed territory of the hills and practise your navigation with confidence. You are also welcome to pick my brain on the course about tips and tricks for running races, mountain marathons and more - I have plenty of experience in these and have lots of advice to give if you would like it!

All running abilities and speeds are welcome! Whilst it is a course aimed at runners, we will mostly be walking, but will  run short sections. It is a course with plenty of learning and we will be stopping and starting a lot - so please expect to be moving at a farily slow pace if we need to. I still advice people to come along in their running kit, as it keeps our options open and people often like to make use of their kit.

On the course, we will look at:

  • Route planning
  • Route finding
  • Pacing/Measuring distance when running.
  • Contour features
  • Compass bearings - running on a bearing
  • Working in a team - navigating as a pair
  • Different navigation techniques and strategies
  • Different maps, GPS
  • Timing, pacing and more!

You will need to bring suitable clothing, shoes and food for a whole day on the hill.

Accomodation is not included.

Suitable for all experience levels - don't worry if you're a beginner! The course can be tailored to suit different experience levels.

The course runs from 9am to 4pm each day. On Day 1, we will meet at Caffi Caban in Brynrefail at 9am, where we will grab a brew and have a chat about the course before driving a short distance to park up to head into the hills for the remainder of the day. Day 2 will be a 9am meet to head out into the hills straight away, back at cars by 3/4pm for a debreif (maybe in a cafe for brews and cakes!).

Minimum of 4 people to run course.
