About the Event

On this 3 day course you will learn all the core skills required to stay safe in Scottish Winter. You will finish the course confident with kit selection, personal movement, route planning and preparation, winter navigation, the use of axes and crampons to keep your self safe as well as how to be independent and competent in our winter mountains.  No winter experience is needed!

This course has been designed to give Women a chance to come out and learn Winter Skills, where the main focus is to get out and learn the skills we need to stay safe in Scottish Winter, in an all female group. This can be a great environment for people who are less inclined to book onto a mixed course.

The course is run from Aviemore and will be conducted by me (Alice).

On each day, we will meet at 8.30am (in The Explorer Cafe, Tiso, Aviemore on Day 1, a designated car park on Day 2) and spend the majority of the day in  the hills. We will finish each day around 4pm.

This course's schedule heavily relies on the weather conditions. In case the weather is unsuitable for certain activities planned, we will make necessary adjustments.

It will give you the skills to begin to move around the hills and mountains during the winter with confidence and competence.

The course will include:

- 3 days out in the Cairngorms

- Hire of Crampon and Ice Axe (booked at registration)

- Personal kit selection and appropriate use of kit

- Route planning and Avalanche Awareness

- Intro to winter navigation skills

- Use of an ice axe for personal movement including cutting steps, self arrest and self belay.

- Use of crampons in ascent/decent, including kicking steps.
